28th, 2009:

Letters to the Editor, Jan. 28, 2009:

Heads should roll in cruelty case
The front-page story exposing the latest evils in yet another Skagit County puppy mill makes one wish that the stocks and public whippings still remained available to the courts for punishing evildoers.
One would find a certain satisfaction in spitting in the faces of the people who let a Chihuahua’s toenails grow so long that they punctured its footpads.
More satisfaction would sing with every lash of a whip laid on the rear ends of those who — for profit — jam dogs together in tiny boxes; keep them pregnant; starve them; make them wallow in their own excrement; and let them die of untreated diseases brought on by malnutrition, overcrowding, filth and constant birthings.
And what about the county officials who for years ignored the county’s ordinances and neighbors’ complaints against this puppy mill, an unlicensed kennel? And what about starving the animal-control enforcement program for years?
Perhaps being jammed into a tiny box for a few days without potty and provender might make funding and executing the laws against cruelty to animals become the passion it should and must be.
John (Jack) de Yonge
Concrete

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Puppies getting help from Anacortes community:

http://www.goskagit.com/home/article/puppies_getting_help_from_anacortes_community/

Things you should know before you buy a puppy:

http://www.komonews.com/news/consumer/38575947.html

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
January 29th, 2009:

Documents: Mom, daughters ran filthy kennels: Here is a news link to a Portland, Oregon tv news station that I was quoted in. The reporter should be commended on a concise, orderly and objective presentation of the facts. Grisly is too kind a word to start this article; it was most polite. It was sad to see those defenseless animals being subjected to wretched conditions and treated in a way that is reprehensible, cruel and unthinkable to any human being with a scintilla of conscience.
To refer to the book of Genesis: When God commanded Adam and Eve to take dominion over the Earth and all the creatures upon it, God was not referring to exploiting them for profit; they were to be caregivers. Even common sense tells us that this type of behavior is unacceptable. What sort of “Pig-God” do these unfeeling “people” pray to?
I am glad to see the outpouring of help and compassionate care from the veterinarians and animal caregivers — such as the Skagit/Snohomish Humane Society and N.O.A.H. — and the many volunteers — both individually and collectively — who rescued and are humanely caring for the defenseless animals.
These animals would have otherwise faced a fate that is unthinkable to anyone with an ounce of compassion. My concern is, how many more of these puppy mill operations are out there that we do not know about, and how can they be stopped?
Too bad we cannot subject these “human beings” to the same punishment that they have inflicted upon man’s best friend.
Timothy T. Donovan
Mount Vernon

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Take action against dog owners
As an animal lover and a registered voter, I feel we all must insist that action be taken immediately. Those who are responsible for the cruelty and death of the animals recently in Skagit and Snohomish counties should be in jail. They should be prosecuted to the maximum, which is, in my opinion, not strict enough.
They should not be allowed to be out free where they can run and start again somewhere else. I am appalled that they are not in jail — preferably one that is outside, with no heat, no blankets, no water, no food and no bathroom facilities. Those of us who are human need to insist that the law take these inhuman monsters and put them away for a very long time.
Nancy Trythall
Sedro-Woolley

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Can check charities at Web site
While reading the stomach-churning article about the animal rescue efforts by the good people from the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office, SPOT and the Chuckanut Valley Veterinary Clinic, I reached for my checkbook.
Then I checked Saving Pets One at a Time (SPOT) on Charitable Solicitations and Trusts on the secretary of state’s Web site. I was very pleased to note that SPOT shows 93 percent of its total expenses to program services during the year reported. The donations are also tax deductible.
The secretary of state’s site is very useful when deciding where your charitable dollar should go. The site is easy to use, and there is human help available. Tax forms from the charity are also available. I clicked on Animal-Related Activities. There are many more charitable categories from which to choose.
Deanna Wagner
Sedro-Woolley

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Of nature, animal mistreatment
Regarding animal abuse:
The Jan. 11 “ropin’ and ridin’” photo inspired some research on the Internet. When asked if roping calves hurts the animal, Keith Martin, executive director of the San Antonio Livestock Exposition, said publicly: “Do I think it hurts the calf? Sure I do. I’m not stupid.”
Doesn’t that put roping calves under intentional harm?
Also, the Jan. 22-23 puppy mill bust warrants a bravo to all those who made the rescue possible, including volunteers, law enforcement and numerous organizations. The service they do is of the highest form.
Mahatma Gandhi stated, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”
Thousands of years ago, humanity used to feel connected to all facets of nature — animals, plants and minerals. That was when humanity believed goodness resided at the core of one’s being, but that way of being was destroyed over a period of hundreds of years. There’s a long history covering why humans chose to separate from the natural world, cursing their own nature in the process.
That history is worth the time of research because, I believe, it explains why humans feel out of touch, separated, cut off and alienated from the very best part of being human — an integrated personhood. Maybe if humans felt more connected to nature, animals, plants and minerals, we wouldn’t have to belittle the innocent for the sake of entertainment, cowardly acts and profit.
Will we ever grow up?
Caroline Seibert
Mount Vernon

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Of puppy mills, lax officials
Regarding the reporting of the great number of puppies found to be in abominable conditions within the authority of our regulations:
First, how anyone could treat them so terribly and illegally is unconscionable.
Second, since that is clearly against the law, why has it been allowed to exist? The operation of these “puppy mills” has been reported to the authorities for some time. Why was nothing done?
You can only realize that your elected officials are not doing their job. From the animal regulation, the police department and our representatives, it is clear that is the case. This is just an example of the lack of attention our regulative authorities have for their jobs.
Remember this at election time.
John Spence
Mount Vernon

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Who foots bill for care of dogs seized from kennels?:

http://www.goskagit.com/home/article/who_foots_bill_for_care_of_dogs_seized_from_kennels/

Animal cruelty charges, lawsuit filed in kennel case:

http://www.goskagit.com/home/article/animal_cruelty_charges_filed_in_kennel_case/

Charges filed in puppy mill case:

http://www.king5.com/video/animal-index.html?nvid=326822

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

January 30th, 2009:

Animal Cruelty Charges For Kennel Owners:

http://www.kirotv.com/news/18599053/detail.html

Ken's E-mails: I need to be put down?:

http://www.komonews.com/news/38709547.html

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
January 31st, 2009:

Another suspected puppy mill raided:

http://www.komonews.com/news/38752932.html

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Olympian:

Thumbs down for puppy mills.
Police have seized nearly 600 dogs from two puppy mills in Snohomish and Skagit counties. Overwhelmed animal shelters have discovered that about 80 percent of the animals are pregnant. According to court documents, the Gold Bar operation made millions of dollars a year selling the puppies — mostly Chihuahuas, shih tzus, poodles, Yorkshire terriers and so-called designer dogs. At the time of the raids, police said the dogs looked sick, had matted fur, were standing in their own feces and had been left without food and water. Fortunately, people have stepped forward with food and cash to help animal shelters cope with the influx of hundreds of sick dogs
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
February 2nd, 2009:

Charges filed in puppy mill case:

http://www.king5.com/localnews/stories/NW_012909WAB-puppy-mill-charges-filed-SW.17012375.html?btm

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Letters to the Editor, Feb. 2, 2009:

Hold dog owners accountable
We have all seen the pictures and read the articles. The Seattle Times (Jan. 24) ran a headline “600 rescued dogs — and 80 percent are pregnant.” The sad situation is not new and only gets worse.
There is enough blame to go around, including for the city, county and state. It all started with greedy and uncaring individuals who should be held accountable. Thank goodness for the Humane Society, S.P.O.T., N.O.A.H. and local veterinarians, plus the many volunteers who are working hard to make a difference! It breaks my heart to see what has been done to innocent and helpless animals.
I realize there are worldwide issues (war, hunger, etc.), but it seems to me that we need to start looking at things in our own area and put pressure on our local officials to bring an end to this out-of-control situation.
Anna Mae Kinkade
Mount Vernon

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Justice for puppy mill owners
There are some people whose rights I just do not care about at all: Those who hurt women, those who hurt children and those who deliberately hurt animals.
That is just what these people who run the puppy mills in Snohomish and Mount Vernon have done. They have deliberately hurt those poor puppies! I saw one puppy that was in obvious pain and was limping because of a hurt leg or paw. I saw another puppy that will have to have his eye removed because it was damaged beyond repair.
The best justice — the only justice — would be for these people to be put in a cage no longer and no wider than the one those poor pups were in. They should also be given the exact same amount of food that they gave those puppies and be forced to live in their own feces just like those puppies did. So is the lack of legal means to bring the operators of these puppy mills to justice. There are apparently carefully worded restrictions and guidelines that have to be used in order to bring these people to justice.
Where are the lawmakers? They are in the same corner as those who craft guidelines to allow rodeos in the county. I wrote a letter to the Skagit Valley Herald in the summer protesting the abuse of the animals. I was assured by one writer that the animals were well cared for. Mrs. Sundberg said that they loved their puppies. What amazes me is the attention our local paper has extended to this matter with daily front-page coverage for more than a week and the all-out support from members of our community. Understandable.
But where is the same cry of outrage when it comes to the wholesale slaughter and torture of our unborn children? What of the atrocities committed daily in our country against our tiniest, most helpless citizens in the name of “freedom of choice”?
Will we ever see the front pages demanding an explanation for cruelty and mistreatment that occurs during an abortion? Will we ever hear the public crying out for justice when it comes to safety for the lives of babies in the womb? When will human life be honored enough that the execution of innocents will be seen for what it is — murder and death, the result of substantial and unjustifiable physical pain inflicted on the lives of infants in utero.
Our government claims to protect women’s health and reproductive freedom, as the people protest that no one has the right to intrude on our most private family matters. Under the guise of protecting women, our government is funding (our tax dollars at work) and authorizing the destruction of 500,000 “little women” every year by authorizing the destruction of 1 million little human beings every year!
Killing our children is killing our children — no matter how many times you say, “It is a private family matter.”
Carolyn Nichols
Mount Vernon

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Throw book at kennel owners
I have found the reports of the puppy mills extremely disturbing. I say throw the book at these people. The kennel operators definitely should not have the option of getting their dogs back. Nor should they be allowed to run a kennel or even own a pet again for that matter.
Fine them. Jail them, and have them suffer as the animals that were depending on them did. Make them pay all incurred expenses and cage them to live in their own feces for awhile.
It is time we quit slapping the wrists of heartless human beings who abuse and neglect animals. The city operates the shelter.

Dogs requiring specialized care will be transferred to breed-specific rescue groups, Reardon said. The remaining dogs, about 100, will be placed in foster homes where the animals' temperament and other traits will be tested in a home environment.

"All the foster families that are going to be reached out to in this effort are approved, trained. They know how to do this," Reardon said.

Once ready, the city plans to host an adoption event where anyone interested can apply and may go home with a pet.

The selection process is being worked out.

"If you're not on a list somewhere, don't worry, there will be time, I promise," she said.

The dogs' former owners failed to meet a Friday deadline to post more than $72,000 worth of bonds or to petition a court to prevent the dogs' transfer.

The couple who lived in the Gold Bar-area home where the dogs were found were charged in Everett District Court last week with six counts of animal cruelty.

Sheriff's officials say the Gold Bar-area dogs are connected to Renee Roske and Mary Anne Holleman, two sisters who ran a Snohomish kennel. The puppy mill investigation lead officials from the sisters' business to a Mount Vernon-area kennel run by their mother, Marjorie Sundberg.

Skagit County sheriff's officials seized around 450 dogs from Sundberg's home.

Sundberg was charged in Skagit County Jan. 29 with four counts of animal cruelty. The Humane Society of Skagit Valley volunteers and staff have been personally affected by the mental and physical state of these animals. Although, true to the nature of dogs, their capacity to forgive and love is still strong. It is amazing after a life of abuse how hard these little dogs are trying to learn to give back to us.
Your voice of opposition to these puppy mills is needed now! Here’s what you can do:
• Contact your local prosecutor’s office, and urge officials to consider first-degree cruelty charges. Currently, only four second-degree charges have been filed, which are misdemeanors.
• Let everyone know the horrible “truth” behind that cute little puppy for sale in a pet shop window — how the mother has suffered to bring you that pup.
• Please continue to volunteer for cleaning and care of all of the animals at the shelter. We need your ongoing help.
• If you are good at writing, send a letter every month to the editor, TV stations and whomever else offers this service. Be persistent.
• Call your legislators. Urge them to support Senate Bill 5651, which would regulate dog kennels to prevent puppy mills and assure humane housing and living conditions. The Humane Society of Skagit Valley does not support the enclosure specifications included in the bill; however, there is more right than wrong with Senate Bill 5651. It is definitely a start in the right direction.
Thank you to everyone who has donated and volunteered. Keep it up, especially since it could be a long battle. We have started strong, and let’s finish strong!
Sandy Nelson, director
Humane Society of Skagit Valley
Burlington

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
February 12th, 2009:

Puppy mills:

http://blog.seattletimes.nwsource.com/northwestvoices/2009/02/12/puppy_mills_1.html

Couple charged with felony counts in kennel case:

http://www.goskagit.com/home/article/couple_charged_with_felony_counts_in_kennel_case/

More charges filed in Skagit County puppy mill case:

http://www.komonews.com/news/local/39528242.html

Bill aims to regulate puppy mills:

http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2009/feb/12/bill-aims-regulate-puppy-mills/

Suspect in Snohomish County puppy mill case tries to keep business:

http://heraldnet.com/article/20090218/NEWS01/702189811

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

February 13th, 2009:

The Everett Herald:

PUPPY MILLS

Deplorable acts need punishing

I'm not surprised to read about cruelty, brutality, and the total absence of compassion in the pursuit of the dollar. Or just for the hell of it. I'd heard of "puppy mills" but never knew exactly what that meant. The gruesome, sickening details and the suffering heaped on the helpless. I know now.

I have always found it impossible to get my mind around how anyone could abuse or neglect a child. Yet they do. We read these things that haunt us all the time. Now the puppy mill where hundreds of dogs are found. Neglected and forgotten, except to churn out puppies to be sold to unsuspecting buyers. Dog lovers.

I am thankful that more than 600 dogs have been rescued from Snohomish and Skagit counties and are now being cared for and are discovering human kindness for the first time. I can only hope that those responsible will be prosecuted. And then, if there is any justice in this world, they will live out their worthless lives in a prison cell. I hold no expectation that they will get what they deserve but we can hold the thought.

One more thing we can do is support the agencies that are caring for these animals with our dollars.

Beverlee Bowman Price
Edmonds

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Love Sucks," a comedy show to benefit rescued puppy-mill dogs:

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/musicnightlife/2008738397_zmus13lovesucks.html

Deplorable acts need punishing:

http://heraldnet.com/article/20090213/OPINION02/702139984

Furry Friends Festival to benefit dogs:

http://www.komonews.com/younews/39600037.html

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
February 14th, 2009:

Charges added in puppy mill case:

http://heraldnet.com/article/20090214/NEWS01/702149942

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
February 15th, 2009:

Letters to the Editor, Feb. 15, 2009:

Pet buyers have responsibility
Many of us are sickened and enraged by the huge puppy mills recently raided by law enforcement. These dogs lived in conditions that would be illegal for chickens, but there are no state or federal regulations to protect them.
I did a little research and discovered there are thousands of greedy dog breeders in this country, only caring about profit. Kudos to our county for working to do something to change things here.
But these kennels wouldn’t be in business if no one bought their mass-produced pets. The pet-buying public has a responsibilty here: Never buy a puppy from a pet store. Responsible breeders want to meet you and check you out. They would never ship puppies off to a store.
Don’t buy a sickly puppy because you feel sorry for it and want to rescue it. You are buying heartache and vet bills for yourself, and perpetuating the cruelty. Report sickly puppies to your humane society or local rescue group.
Never buy a pet on an impulse. Dogs can live 10 to 18 years. Are you willing to make that commitment?
Always see where the puppy was raised and meet its parents. If you think that is too much trouble, you have no business buying a dog. Check out the Humane Society for more information.
Jan Gordon
Bow

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
February 16th, 2009:

Seized pups gaining weight, confidence:

http://www.komonews.com/news/local/39693182.html

Animal shelter robbed of dog and cat food:

http://www.king5.com/video/news-index.html?nvid=333255

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

February 17th, 2009:

Shelter caring for puppy mill dogs to hold fundraiser:

http://www.king5.com/localnews/stories/NW_021709WAB-puppy-mill-costs-SW.26e73ab3.html?btm

Link to Animal Festival on Saturday 02/21/09:

http://www.furryfriendsfestival.com/

Puppy mill dogs putting financial drain on animal shelters:

http://www.king5.com/video/index.html?nvid=333177

Raw: Latest video of rescued puppy mill dogs:

http://www.king5.com/video/animal-index.html?nvid=333125

See the “World’s Toughest Rodeo” & Help Rescued Puppies!:

http://www.komonews.com/news/preview/39742232.html

World's Toughest Rodeo presents 'Toughest Cowboy':

http://www.comcastarenaeverett.com/MainArena/Events/General.ashx?p=65&69_evntdt=640&69_evnt=448

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Letters to the Editor, Feb. 17, 2009:

‘Rescue’ next dog from shelter
As a local pet groomer, I see evidence of puppy mill dogs and unhealthy or misrepresented dogs way too much. Usually the owner is quick to defend that “The woman was so nice and really cared.” That they “rescued” the dog ... for a steep price or the dog is a “rare breed.” Some of these folks are naive and some are just soft-hearted.
I urge these folks to use their soft hearts to please rescue a pet from an overcrowded shelter the next time instead of encouraging these puppy mills to pump out litter after litter for pure profit, especially at a time of people losing their homes. I have on many occasions had to report suspected puppy mills only to later hear from neighbors that “they just don’t open their door” for the officer. They laugh at the law.
Every dog that I have ever owned has been a shelter or rescue dog and I’d like to think that they appreciate the second chance at life. There will never be enough homes, especially with the many loopholes in our legal system that continue to allow these people to profit at the expense of these helpless animals. I see a slap on the wrist coming on! The greed is well worth it to the puppy mill operators. I am pleading for our local prosecutors to throw a library of books at these “people.” We have to speak up for the helpless now.
Germaine Kornegay
Burlington
<br The delay of trial because their attorney is not available is costing the county up to $400 a day and should not be allowed. The culprits should be fined, jailed and their property confiscated at once. The animal control officials are not doing their jobs, when an illegal condition of this magnitude is allowed to last as long as this has. The entire deterioration of the financial situation is caused because adequate control of this type is allowed to exist. My neighbor has jokingly suggested the elected officials should all be subjected to a WASL and morality test before taking offices. It was immediately evident by the expressions and body language of every dog that they have been through horror and torture.
We know these are very strong words but they don’t even begin to convey the depth of agony these dogs are in. Some dogs cowered in the corner and when we reached for them or got near them, their entire bodies were shaking and quivering. Some of the dogs were so needy for attention, they continually jumped and were extremely frantic.
We have seen some of the dogs with rotten teeth and others don’t have any teeth at all. Most of the dogs have their vocal chords removed. The absolutely frightened and panicked looks on their faces are unforgettable and will haunt us for years to come.
The dogs do not seem to know anything about human contact. We have seen some stare at their food bowls not able to comprehend what is in there. The pain, misery, sorrow and trauma these animals have had to endure will take a long time to heal if ever.
There is no way to undo the tremendous far-reaching harm and damage caused. The dogs cannot talk, they cannot go to therapy, they cannot do anything except take what is given to them. The dogs are helpless victims. This is a tragic situation that has left each dog in shock. Please check out the Humane Society of Skagit Valley. There are many ways to help. We all owe it to these innocent victims.
Karen Roberts
Sedro-Woolley

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dogs should not go back
So the kennel owners charged with neglect want the dogs back. Well, I say no! Unfortunately it is not my decision. I can only ask what kind of people are we if this is allowed?
These dogs need love, proper food, and living conditions. I have talked to many in the area about the reported conditions these animals were in. All of the people I have talked with feel the dog owners should not be allowed any contact with the dogs and also feel they should not be allowed to ever own another animal.
Abuse is abuse whether it is toward another human being, an animal or property. If you abuse another human being, you go to prison, if you abuse or destroy property, you are made to pay restitution and serve time. The animals rescued need the same justice. Justice for those that have died, those that have suffered and those still to be born.
Skagit County and its residents needs to stand strong and shout “This kind of abuse will not go unpunished. We will not allow this to continue.” Let us become the voice for God’s creatures who cannot speak for themselves.
Nancy Trythall
Sedro-Woolley

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

March 10th, 2009:

Kennel owner will get some dogs back:

http://www.goskagit.com/home/article/kennel_owner_will_get_some_dogs_back/

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

March 11th, 2009:

Senate passes bill cracking down on puppy mills:

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/6420ap_wa_xgr_puppy_mills.html

Senate passes puppy mill bill:

http://www.komonews.com/news/local/41132937.html

Senate passes bill cracking down on puppy mills:

http://www.theolympian.com/northwest/story/784388.html

Senate passes bill cracking down on puppy mills:

http://www.bellinghamherald.com/northwest/story/827094.html

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
March 12th, 2009:

Senate passes bill cracking down on puppy mills:

http://www.goskagit.com/home/article/senate_passes_bill_cracking_down_on_puppy_mills/

Front porch: Grandmas in local history: They are having a benefit to raise money for the Gold Bar puppies:

http://heraldnet.com/article/20090312/NEWS01/703129900

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

March 14th, 2009:

Prosecutors given more time to file Gold Bar dog charges:

http://heraldnet.com/article/20090314/NEWS01/703149881

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

March 17th, 2009:

Letters to the Editor, March 17th, 2009:
March 17th, 2009:

Breeders should live like dogs
It was with great glee when I heard the (alleged) puppy mill owners might get a jail sentence, however in retrospect that is much too good for them. I believe all their property should be confiscated and sold to take care of all the vet bills, etc., that have incurred because of their neglect and they should be put in a cage in a dark basement, fed gruel once a day and left to live in their own feces and urine for the rest of their lives.
The county officials that let this happen should be put in the same situation for a couple of weeks, maybe they would be more serious about doing their job.
No breeder needs more than 10 dogs.
There should be surprise ongoing inspections monthly.
Pet stores should be banned from selling pets; adoptions from shelters should be their priority.
People that abuse animals for the almighty dollar make me sick.
Leilani Erps
Camano Island

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rodeo collects food for dogs from alleged puppy mill:

http://blog.seattletimes.nwsource.com/crime/2009/03/17/rodeo_collects_dog_food_for_al.html

Foster Care Needed For Rescued Dogs:

http://www.kirotv.com/news/18950798/detail.html

Rescued puppy mill dogs need homes:

http://www.king5.com/localnews/stories/NW_031709WAB-puppy-mill-dogs-adoption-SW.44dfc4d4.html?btm

Seattle Humane Society Rescues Dogs in Puppy Mill Raid:

http://www.seattlehumane.org/explore/news/puppy-mill

See photos of the rescued pups in our care.:

http://seattlehumane.jalbum.net/PuppyMillRescue/

Hear Brenda Barnette's interview on KOMO 1000 Newsradio.

Consumer man Herb Weisbaum interviews Seattle Humane CEO Brenda Barnette about the difference between puppy mills and reputable breeders.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'And I just fell in love with her eyes':

http://www.komonews.com/news/local/41408452.html

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
March 19th, 2009:
Dogs rescued from puppy mills ready for adoption:

http://www.king5.com/video/?z=y&nvid=343523

House Judiciary Committee: Public: ESB 5200, SSB 5402, SSB 5651:

http://tvw.org/media/mediaplayer.cfm?evid=2009031103&TYPE=V&CFID=3063653&CFTOKEN=17668139&bhcp=1

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

March 22nd, 2009:

Adopt from reputable breeders or shelters to avoid puppy mill pets:

http://www.goskagit.com/home/article/adopt_from_reputable_breeders_or_shelters_to_avoid_puppy_mill_pets/

Stop and think before getting that new puppy!:

http://www.examiner.com/x-4929-Portland-Dogs-Examiner~y2009m3d22-Stop-and-think-before-getting-that-new-puppy

Raw: Dozens of puppy mill dogs go to new homes:

http://www.king5.com/video/?z=y&nvid=344474

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

March 23rd, 2009:

The Olympian: Puppy mill dogs adopted from Everett shelter:

http://www.theolympian.com/northwest/story/796216.html

Tacoma-The News Tribune: Puppy mill dogs adopted from Everett shelter:

http://www.thenewstribune.com/news/northwest/story/685026.html

The Bellingham Herald: Puppy mill dogs adopted from Everett shelter:

http://www.bellinghamherald.com/northwest/story/842211.html

Skagit Valley Herald: Puppy mill dogs adopted from Everett shelter:

http://www.goskagit.com/home/article/puppy_mill_dogs_adopted_from_everett_shelter/

Dogs from suspected puppy mill meet their new families:

http://heraldnet.com/article/20090323/NEWS01/703239912

Puppy mill dogs get new homes:

http://www.king5.com/animals/news/stories/NW_032209WAB-puppy-mill-dogs-families-SW.5f81d366.html

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

March 24th, 2009:

Breeder wants county to return seized dogs:

http://heraldnet.com/article/20090324/NEWS01/703249858

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
March 26th, 2009:

A MUST WATCH TOMORROW ON FRIDAY MARCH 27th, 2009 at 11:35 pm (Eastern Standard Time) that is 8:35 p.m. Seattle, WA time.: TV Alert: March 27, ABC's Nightline will be investigating puppy mills:

http://www.examiner.com/x-5831-NY-Animal-Welfare-Examiner~y2009m3d26-TV-Alert-March-27-ABCs-Nightline-will-be-investigating-puppy-mills

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Did you see the legislative review today? Lewis County health officials are checking the property northeast of Toledo. The place calls itself Three Mountains Dog Rescue. The health officers have been here before and found more than 120 dogs in outdoor cages with murky drinking water.Officials found indications that the deadly brucellosis virus may be spreading through the dogs. 41 had to be euthanized, we're told. Those horses were seized.A quarantine order was slapped on the place because of the dog disease.Lewis County prosecutor Mike Golden is investigating allegations that the property owner brought in more dogs, violating the quarantine."Potentially the court could order if it finds her in contempt, could order all of those animals be removed," said Golden. "The fact that she may or may not have too many dogs on the property is one issue. But what really has her in trouble now with the law is that horse. She's not supposed to have any horses here.""I think it's horrible. I'm appalled. I think it's horrible," said Tonja Nichols, a neighbor. "I know this is the country and people can have animals, but animals have rights and they should be treated well."We tried and failed to get a response from owner Theresa Hutton. She told us earlier that she doesn't hurt animals; she rescues them."It just seems really wrong and unjust," said Nichols. Animal rights folks see horses that need new homes and dogs that may have been given a death sentence because of what they fear is an unchecked spread of brucellosis. The Lewis County prosecutor will make an animal cruelty charging decision next week.

July 2nd, 2007:12-year-old girl missing from Lewis County home: Video:
http://www.king5.com/video/index.html?nvid=156052" target="_blank"
http://www.king5.com/video/index.html?nvid=156052

July 2nd, 2007:12-year-old missing girl located:
http://www.king5.com/topstories/stories/NW_070207WAB_lewiscounty_missinggirl_SW.36cf6cfe.html" target="_blank"
http://www.king5.com/topstories/stories/NW_070207WAB_lewiscounty_missinggirl_SW.36cf6cfe.html

By JANE MCCARTHY / KING 5 News
Katie HuttonTOLEDO, Wash. – The Lewis County Sheriff’s Dept. on Monday was searching for a 12-year-old girl who has been missing since late Saturday night. Search-and-rescue crews were notified after someone spotted the girl walking along a road Monday evening. Katie Hutton's mother told Lewis County sheriff's deputies she and her daughter got into an argument at their Toledo-area home Saturday night, and on Sunday morning, her mother says, Katie and her pink bicycle were gone. She said she looked most of the day before reporting Katie missing just before 4 p.m. Sunday.
Video
http://www.king5.com/video/index.html?nvid=156052" target="_blank"
Katie Hutton missing since Saturday
Katie is very small for a 12-year-old - standing just 3 feet, 6 inches tall and weighing 60 pounds. Neighbor Tonja Nichols searched her own five acres for the little girl. "And I obviously didn't find anything. I'm very upset, my kids are upset. I can't sleep," she said. The sheriff says it doesn't appear Katie has ever run away. There has been stress in the family as of late. Katie's mother, Theresa, who says she runs a dog rescue, is being investigated for animal neglect. A few weeks ago, police and health officials swept through the property and euthanized 41 dogs with a contagious animal disease called brucellosis. "We were there several times on official business... had nothing to do with child abuse or anything like that, but we were there because of the dogs, and that would heighten someone's sense of uneasiness," said Sheriff Steve Mansfield. Deputies were hoping leads would come from talking with neighbors and searching the thick woods in case the little girl has simply lost her way.

Allegedly ill-kept dogs seized:
By April Chan The Olympian • Published August 15, 2007
http://www.theolympian.com/southsound/story/191408.html Fifty-four dogs seized from a Toledo home remain under quarantine, Lewis County Animal Services spokeswoman Amy Clark said Wednesday. The dogs were taken after the owner failed to appear in Lewis County District Court to face animal-cruelty charges related to horses on the property. The dogs were living in filthy conditions, and many didn’t have food or clean water, Clark said. Up to 80 dogs were left on the property because the shelter couldn’t accommodate them, she said.Theresa Hutton of Toledo was arrested Aug. 9. She was released Friday on her own recognizance after making her court appearance, prosecutor Michael Golden said. Hutton said she wasn’t aware of the mandatory court appearance. Officers took only small, expensive and rare breeding dogs, Hutton said.“The dogs were fat and healthy except for the two with mange,” she said. Their living area hadn’t been cleaned, and they didn’t have food and water because she was in jail, she said.In April, the state Department of Agriculture placed Hutton’s property under quarantine after veterinarians saw dogs infected with canine brucellosis and traced the disease to her residence, Clark said.County staff has tested animals at the property several times for further infection, and 41 have been euthanized, Hutton said.Hutton is scheduled to appear in court again Sept. 5 to follow up on the three counts against her regarding the horses, Golden said. The charges came about after Lewis County investigators filed a petition regarding 11 horses in her care. The animals reportedly did not have adequate shelter or clean water and were confined for extended periods. Several reportedly had split hooves or overgrown hooves and areas of rot.Hutton’s children are living with a relative as she continues to fight the animal cruelty charges, she said. The relative had reportedly filed a parenting petition after Hutton’s 12-year-old daughter ran away from home. A judge decided there was reason to investigate and has instructed that Hutton can see her children once a week for now.“They just want to come home,” Hutton said of her children. “They ask about how their animals are doing. My 5-year-old has never been away from me. It’s just so traumatizing it’s unbelievable.”

April 15, 2009:
Chehalis Mom On Trial For Starving, Abusing Child: Video included:
http://www.kirotv.com/news/19191894/detail.html
CHEHALIS, Wash. -- A Chehalis mother is on trial on charges of criminally mistreating her child.
Charges came after a raid on Theresa Hutton’s property in June 2007 to rescue animals, not children.
More than 40 dogs and two horses bred by Hutton had to be euthanized after contracting a deadly disease while living in filthy conditions.
Prosecutors said Hutton also mistreated her young daughter on the property, forcing her to sleep outside on hay without any blankets, feeding her little and subjecting her to bizarre and painful punishment.
A teacher testified on Wednesday about the girl being very small. You called me your child, and despite a number of chewed shoes and a couple of murdered throw pillows, I became your best friend.Whenever I was"bad," you'd shake your finger at me and ask "How could you?" -- but then you'd relent, and roll me over for a bellyrub. My housebreaking took a little longer than expected, because you were terribly busy, but we worked on that together. I remember those nights of nuzzling you in bed and listening to your confidences and secret dreams, and I believed that life could not be any more perfect. We went for long walks and runs in the park, car rides, stops for ice cream (I only got the cone because "ice cream is bad for dogs," you said), and I took long naps in the sun waiting for you to come home at the end of the day.Gradually, you began spending more time at work and on your career, and more time searching for a human mate. I waited for you patiently, comforted you through heartbreaks and disappointments, never chided you about bad decisions, and romped with glee at your homecomings, and when you fell in love. She, now your wife, is not a "dog person" --still I welcomed her into our home, tried to show her affection, and obeyed her. I was happy because you were happy. Then the human babies came along and I shared your excitement. I was fascinated by their pinkness, how they smelled, and I wanted to mother them, too. Only she and you worried that I might hurt them, and I spent most of my time banished to another room, or to a dog crate. Oh, how I wanted to love them, but I became a "prisoner of love."As they began to grow, I became their friend. They clung to my fur and pulled themselves up on wobbly legs, poked fingers in my eyes, investigated my ears, and gave me kisses on my nose. I loved everything about them and their touch -- because your touch was now so infrequent -- and I would have defended them with my life if need be. I would sneak into their beds and listen to their worries and secret dreams, and together we waited for the sound of your car in the driveway. There had been a time, when others asked you if you had a dog, that you produced a photo of me from your wallet and told them stories about me. These past few years, you just answered "yes" and changed the subject. I had gone from being "your dog" to "just a dog," and you resented every expenditure on my behalf. Now, you have a new career opportunity in another city, and you and they will be moving to an apartment that does not allow pets. You've made the right decision for your "family," but there was a time when I was your only family. I was excited about the car ride until we arrived at the animal shelter. It smelled of dogs and cats, of fear, of hopelessness. You filled out the paperwork and said "I know you will find a good home for her." They shrugged and gave you a pained look. They understand the realities facing a middle-aged dog, even one with "papers."You had to pry your son's fingers loose from my collar as he screamed "No, Daddy! Please don't let them take my dog!" And I worried for him, and what lessons you had just taught him about friendship and loyalty, about love and responsibility, and about respect for all life. You gave me a good-bye pat on the head, avoided my eyes, and politely refused to take my collar and leash with you. You had a deadline to meet and now I have one, too. After you left, the two nice ladies said you probably knew about your upcoming move months ago and made no attempt to find me another good home. They shook their heads and asked "How could you?"They are as attentive to us here in the shelter as their busy schedules allow. They feed us, of course, but I lost my appetite days ago. At first, whenever anyone passed my pen, I rushed to the front, hoping it was you that you had changed your mind -- that this was all a bad dream ... or I hoped it would at least be someone who cared, anyone who might save me. When I realized I could not compete with the frolicking for attention of happy puppies, oblivious to their own fate, I retreated to a far corner and waited.I heard her footsteps as she came for me at the end of the day, and I padded along the aisle after her to a separate room. A blissfully quiet room. She placed me on the table and rubbed my ears, and told me not to worry. My heart pounded in anticipation of what was to come, but there was also a sense of relief. The prisoner of love had run out of days. As is my nature, I was more concerned about her.The burden which she bears weighs heavily on her, and I know that, the same way I knew your every mood. She gently placed a tourniquet around my foreleg as a tear ran down her cheek. I licked her hand in the same way I used to comfort you so many years ago. She expertly slid the hypodermic needle into my vein. As I felt the sting and the cool liquid coursing through my body, I lay down sleepily, looked into her kind eyes and murmured "How could you?"Perhaps because she understood my dogspeak, she said "I'm so sorry."She hugged me, and hurriedly explained it was her job to make sure I went to a better place, where I wouldn't be ignored or abused or abandoned, or have to fend for myself -- a place of love and light so very different from this earthly place. And with my last bit of energy, I tried to convey to her with a thump of my tail that my "How could you?" was not directed at her. It was you, My Beloved Master, I was thinking of. I will think of you and wait for you forever.May everyone in your life continue to show you so much loyalty.
The EndA note from the author:If "How Could You?" brought tears to your eyes as you read it, as it did to mine as I wrote it, it is because it is the composite story of the millions of formerly owned pets who die each year in American and Canadian animal shelters. Anyone is welcome to distribute the essay for a noncommercial purpose, as long as it is properly attributed with the copyright notice. Please use it to help educate, on your websites, in newsletters, on animal shelter and vet office bulletin boards. Tell the public that the decision to add a pet to the family is an important one for life, that animals deserve our love and sensible care, that finding another appropriate home for your animal is your responsibility and any local humane society or animal welfare league can offer you good advice, and that all life is precious. Please do your part to stop the killing, and encourage all spay and neuter campaigns in order to prevent unwanted animals.Animal Loverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04952707387618688523noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8114507638922773782.post-78465951115278198602009-05-01T20:49:00.000-07:002009-05-01T20:51:25.045-07:00Puppies Aren't Products Campaign

Puppies aren't products campaign!
http://network.bestfriends.org/truth/news/33503.html
Animal Loverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04952707387618688523noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8114507638922773782.post-64751678958715614182009-05-01T20:46:00.000-07:002009-05-01T20:49:02.162-07:00SB5651 (Puppy Mill Bill) PASSES House Floor Debate, on April 8th, 2009

SB5651 PASSES House Floor Debate
April 8th, 2009 @ 3:30 p.m. The link that I provide below is the hearing for SB5651, on the House Floor Debate, on April 8th, 2009. Enjoy! There were two amendments that went for vote on the House Floor, as well. They were Amendment 490, in which no one showed to testify, and therefore it FAILED. The second amendment was Amendment 516, and there were two people who testified in regards to Amendment 516, and they were Rep. Judy Warnick, from the 13th District (Moses Lake), and she urged a "Yes Vote" to support this amendment (which FAILED). The second person to testify on Amendment 516 was Rep. Jamie Pedersen, from the 43rd District (Seattle), and he urged a "No Vote" against this amendment (which FAILED). In regards to SB5651 (the actual bill) there were three people to testify on this bill. The first person was Rep. Jamie Pedersen, from the 43rd District (Seattle), and he urged a "Yes Vote", in support of SB5651. He also testified that eight (8) months ago his family adopted a young Mini Golden Doodle, from a puppy mill, not knowing what it was at the time. The second person to testify was Rep. Judy Warnick, from the 13th District (Moses Lake), and she urged a "No Vote" against SB5651. The third person to testify was Rep. Tom Campbell (one of my favorites), from the 2nd District (Roy), and he urged a "Yes Vote", in support of SB5651. Rep. Tom Campell has five (5) Rottweiler's of his own, and is a true animal lover.
When you click on the link below to watch the video you will see the minutes left remaining in the video appear in the bottom right hand corner. If you move the cursor at the bottom of the video until the minutes remaining say "12:20" it will be at the end of the previous bill heard, and start at the begining of the bill, for SB5651. Enjoy, and Thank You to everyone who supported this bill, testified on the bills behalf, and for the work that everyone did towards this bill.
Event Date:
April 08, 2009 3:30pm
Event Description:The Washington State House of Representatives convenes for regular floor session on pending legislation, including ESSB 5651 (Dog breeding practices), in Olympia (afternoon session).
RUNTIME:40 min http://tvw.org/media/mediaplayer.cfm?evid=2009040078B&TYPE=V&CFID=3502693&CFTOKEN=65480041&bhcp=1

Animal Loverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04952707387618688523noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8114507638922773782.post-24761085555740333282009-05-01T20:39:00.000-07:002009-05-01T20:45:52.103-07:00Ausland Aussie's ~ Kristi L. But a closer look into how these stores obtain animals reveals a system in which the high price that consumers pay for “that doggie in the window” pales in comparison to the cost paid by animals who are sold in pet stores or forced to produce them. That adorable little scamp in the store probably came from a “puppy mill,” a breeding kennel that raises dogs in cramped, crude, filthy conditions. The majority of these facilities are in the Midwest, but kennels can be found throughout the country, and some dealers even import puppies from other countries.(1) Constant confinement and a lack of adequate veterinary care and socialization often result in animals who are unhealthy and difficult to socialize. As a result, many are abandoned within weeks or months of their adoption by frustrated buyers—further exacerbating the tragic companion animal overpopulation crisis. Cages, Filth, and Neglect Puppy mill kennels can consist of anything from small cages made of wood and wire mesh to tractor-trailer cabs or simple tethers attached to trees. One Arkansas facility had “cages hanging from the ceiling of an unheated cinder-block building ….”(2) Female dogs are bred twice a year and are usually destroyed when they are no longer able to produce puppies.(3) Mothers and their litters often suffer from malnutrition, exposure, and a lack of adequate veterinary care. Puppies are taken from their mothers and sold to brokers who pack them into crates for transport and resale to pet stores. Puppies who are shipped from mill to broker to pet store can travel hundreds of miles in pickup trucks, tractor trailers, and/or airplanes, often without adequate food, water, ventilation, or shelter. Two men faced charges after 38 puppies were found to be confined to a feces-filled van without food, water, or space to exercise. The men were transporting the animals from Oklahoma to Florida when a passerby noticed the dogs’ distressed barking and the foul stench emanating from the van, which was parked at a Daytona Beach motel.(4) In Tennessee, 150 overheated puppies, who were traveling from a Missouri puppy mill to pet stores on the East Coast, were found in a cargo truck without air conditioning; four died.(5) Even if a store claims that it doesn’t buy from puppy mills, there is a good chance that it buys from a broker who does.(6) Young puppies who survive the unsanitary conditions at puppy mills and endure the grueling transport to pet stores have rarely received the kind of loving human contact that is necessary for them to become suitable companions. Breeders, brokers, and pet stores ensure maximum profits by not spending money for proper food, housing, or veterinary care. Conditions don’t improve much when the puppies reach pet stores. Dogs who are kept in small cages without exercise, love, or human contact tend to develop undesirable behaviors and may bark excessively or become destructive and unsociable. Unlike many humane societies and shelters, pet stores do not screen buyers or inspect the future homes of the dogs they sell. Poor enforcement of humane laws allows shops to continue selling sick animals, although humane societies and police departments sometimes succeed in closing down stores where severe abuse is uncovered. Farms and Brokers Do Big Business When PETA conducted an undercover investigation at Nielsen Farms, a puppy mill in Kansas, PETA’s investigator found that the dogs had no bedding or protection from the cold or heat. Some dogs were suffering from untreated wounds, ear infections, and abscessed feet. Confinement and loneliness had caused some mother dogs to go mad. PETA’s investigator witnessed one USDA inspection, during which the officer glanced at the cages but did not examine the dogs. Our investigation led to the Kansas facility’s closing and a $20,000 fine from the USDA. The Nielsens are also “permanently disqualified from being licensed” by the USDA.(7) There are thousands of breeders and dealers across the country. In Missouri alone, there are more than 1,400 licensed dog-breeding operations, although so many illegal breeders are in business that a state audit advised that the program designed to regulate commercial breeding was ineffective.(8) The nation’s largest puppy broker is the Hunte Corporation in Missouri, which also exports dogs overseas.(9) The company has been linked to numerous negligent pet stores and breeders and has sponsored American Kennel Club (AKC) meetings.(10) The USDA has loaned the company more than $4 million for expansion and upgrades in recent years—taxpayer money being used to bring more misery to dogs and puppies.(11) The Plight of Purebreds Some people impulsively obtain purebred dogs, even though they may not be educated about the breed or ready for the commitment that animal companions require. Movies such as 101 Dalmatians and Beethoven, TV shows like Frasier, and commercials such as those for Taco Bell have caused a jump in the popularity of certain breeds, yet very few potential dog caretakers take the time to investigate the traits and needs of the breed that they are considering. “Every time Hollywood makes a dog movie, the breed goes to hell,” says one caretaker of Bouvier des Flandres dogs. A Dalmatian fancier concludes that “… the unscrupulous breeders will see there’s a profit margin there.”(12) When there is a surge in demand for a particular breed, puppy mills try to meet that demand, but when Jack Russell terriers don’t turn out to be just like Frasier’s “Eddie” or St. Bernards don’t act just like “Beethoven,” rescue groups and animal shelters become flooded with these breeds. The AKC, which opposes mandatory spay/neuter programs for purebred dogs, receives millions of dollars from breeders who pay AKC registration fees.(13) The AKC registered more than 421,000 dogs in 2005, some of whom will join the millions of animals who end up in animal shelters every year.(14) Buyers may be swayed by talk of “papers” and “AKC registration,” but these papers cannot ensure good temperament or good health. Says one veterinarian, “The best use of pedigree papers is for housebreaking your dog. They don’t mean a damn thing.”(15) The AKC has minimum care standards for “high-volume breeding” facilities, but with 14 inspectors and an operating budget that is directed toward registration and dog shows, the AKC can only manage to inspect its registered kennels once every two years.(16) By its own admission, some of the more problematic kennels have simply sought registration services (such as Dog Registry of America, Sporting Dog Registry, American Hunting Dog Registry, and All American Dog Registry, to name a few) that don’t perform inspections.(17) At puppy mills, dogs are bred for quantity, not quality, so unmonitored genetic defects and personality disorders that are passed on from generation to generation are common. This situation results in high veterinary bills for people who buy these dogs and the possibility that unsociable or maladjusted dogs will be disposed of by their unprepared “owners.” “There is virtually no consideration of temperament,” says one dog trainer. “I wish legislators could sit in my office and watch ... people sobbing in extreme emotional pain over having to decide whether to euthanize their dog because of some serious behavioral problem.”(18) Inadequate Inspections The USDA is supposed to monitor and inspect kennels to ensure that they are not violating the housing standards of the Animal Welfare Act, but kennel inspections are a low priority. In the U.S., there are more than 1,000 research facilities, more than 2,800 exhibitors, and 4,500 dealers that are supposed to be inspected each year.(19) There are three APHIS sector offices with a total of approximately 70 veterinary inspectors who are supposed to inspect, unannounced, the various types of facilities covered by the AWA.(20) This means that 70 inspectors have to cover more than 8,300 facilities nationwide. Puppy mills are rarely monitored by state governments, and existing regulations vary from state to state. In Missouri, for instance, each of the 2,100 facilities is supposed to be inspected once a year, but there are only 12 inspectors employed to handle the task.(21) Even with an estimated 1,300 puppy mills in Wisconsin, inspections of breeder facilities that sell at least 50 dogs and cats are voluntary, and there is no funding for enforcement of these regulations.(22,23) The Puppy Pipelines Dealers who want to avoid relevant U.S. laws—the few that exist—look elsewhere to continue doing business. Says one Canadian lawyer, “[P]uppy mill operators in the States buy from us. And crossing the border isn’t a problem either. They cross them all the time.”(24) For example, there is a network of breeders and smugglers who bring puppies into the U.S. from Mexico. A Los Angeles woman was arrested during a sting operation on suspicion of selling under-aged puppies and for failure to provide proper veterinary care for the animals; one of the officers involved in the capture of the woman said that the smuggler fit the description of a puppy smuggler: The person uses an alias and a throwaway cell phone and sells puppies from the backs of cars or on street corners.(25) A New Hampshire breeder, who was arrested for cruelty to animals when dozens of dogs and cats were found living in filth, was selling puppies from Russia for as much as $1,900 each on the Internet.(26) While no federal agency tracks the number of puppies that enter the U.S., an investigation by a New York TV station concluded that thousands of puppies arrive every year and that many are sick or dead when they get here. A staff member at a private veterinary clinic at John F. Kennedy Airport told the CBS affiliate that she had seen “a couple of cases where they (puppies) were shrink-wrapped.” The station also found that although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other federal agencies have been alerted to the problem of underaged, sick puppies who are crammed and shipped into filthy, crowded kennels for hours at a time, none has jurisdiction over the animals’ care. The CDC only checks animals for rabies, and the USDA regulations for dogs’ age and transport conditions do not apply to foreign shipments.(27) Some states have enacted “puppy lemon” laws that give caretakers the right to return sick or dead puppies for replacement or that offer the option of having veterinary expenses paid by the seller. Unfortunately, depending on the state, the law may not clearly say to whom it applies, or it may affect only pet stores or breeders that sell a certain number of animals each year. Check with your state’s attorney’s office to find out about your state’s laws. What You Can Do With millions of unwanted dogs and cats (including purebreds) dying every year in animal shelters, there is simply no reason for animals to be bred and sold for the pet-shop trade. Without these stores, the financial incentive for puppy mills would disappear, and the suffering of these dogs would end. The best way to find an animal companion is through an animal shelter or rescue group. Rocky the dog has a new home. The old gray dog, who became the face of chained dogs all over King County in a Feb. 25 Seattle P-I article, has been adopted by a Roy couple who read the article and, like many other readers, felt moved to help Rocky. So, Diana Crimi found the owners at their Enumclaw home, and persuaded them that Rocky would enjoy a better life living at the Crimi home in Roy, with an acre and a half of fenced backyard in which to roam. After spending most of his time tied up in a backyard, in all weather, Rocky spent his first night at the Crimi home sleeping on a doggy bed in a clean, dry garage empty of any bothersome cars. Rocky, about 14 years old, will join five other dogs that Crimi has rescued. Crimi said she plans to introduce Rocky to all her dogs one by one, and eventually allow him to join the other dogs in the house. But where Rocky lays his head will be up to him. "He can sleep wherever he wants," Crimi said. "My goal is to let him have his last years with another pack of dogs and people and love and attention, and just take good care of him." Rocky has some medical problems including a limp, a sore near his ear, and he appears underweight. Crimi said she plans to take him to see a vet soon, but she wanted to give him a day to get used to his new surroundings first. "We'll give him a day or two to rest and settle in before we start the bathing, worming and all the other goodies that will make him feel better and be a healthy dog," Crimi said. Some folks owned my mother; decided to breed ... No reason I know of except for their greed. I know I was hungry, I know I was cold And they sold me quite early,at just five weeks old. Owners number one seemed friendly at first And life was quite good, until my bubble burst. They started to argue;their marriage split up And in went the ad, for sale 4 month pup. Some more folks arrived, the next ones in line ... They treated me kindly, and life was just fine. But the master dropped dead, and she couldn't cope So they sold me again as I began to lose hope. I now had a new home up in the sky ... We went up the lift, fourteen floors high. The new folks were kind, but they left me all day. I was busting to pee, and had no where to play. It was boredom, I think, when I chewed up that chair. They agreed I should go, but it just wasn't fair. The next home was good and I thought this was it ... They started to show, and I won ... well ... a bit. Then somebody told them that I had "no bone," And in went the ad, for sale to good home. The next lot were dreadful... they wanted a guard, But I didn't know that ... although I tried hard. One night they got burgled and I didn't bark, Tied up in that shed, alone in the dark. For four months I lay in that cold dark shed With only an old paper sack for a bed, A small dish of water all slimy and green ... The state I was in, well, it had to be seen. I longed for some help, for an end to the pain. Then some new people came, and I went off again. So now I'm with Rescue, and this home is good! There are walks in the country and lots of good food... There are kisses and cuddles to greet me each day And I dread the time that they send me away. But for now here I stand, skin and bone, on all fours... Please don't let this happen to any of yours! ~AUTHOR UNKNOWN
Animal Loverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04952707387618688523noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8114507638922773782.post-64867438975314980832009-05-01T20:08:00.000-07:002009-05-01T20:11:11.227-07:00A Letter From A Shelter Manager

A Letter from a Shelter Manager ~ I think our society needs a huge "Wake-up" call. As a shelter manager, I am going to share a little insight with you all...a view from the inside if you will. First off, all of you breeders/sellers should be made to work in the "back" of an animal shelter for just one day. Maybe if you saw the life drain from a few sad, lost, confused eyes, you would change your mind about breeding and selling to people you don't even know. That puppy you just sold will most likely end up in my shelter when it's not a cute little puppy anymore. So how would you feel if you knew that there's about a 90% chance that dog will never walk out of the shelter it is going to be dumped at? Purebred or not! About 50% of all of the dogs that are "owner surrenders" or "strays", that come into my shelter are purebred dogs. The most common excuses I hear are; "We are moving and we can't take our dog (or cat)." Really? Where are you moving too that doesn't allow pets? Or they say "The dog got bigger than we thought it would". How big did you think a German Shepherd would get? "We don't have time for her". Really? I work a 10-12 hour day and still have time for my 6 dogs! "She's tearing up our yard". How about making her a part of your family? They always tell me "We just don't want to have to stress about finding a place for her we know she'll get adopted, she's a good dog". Odds are your pet won't get adopted & how stressful do you think being in a shelter is? Well, let me tell you, your pet has 72 hours to find a new family from the moment you drop it off. Sometimes a little longer if the shelter isn't full and your dog manages to stay completely healthy. If it sniffles, it dies. Your pet will be confined to a small run/kennel in a room with about 25 other barking or crying animals. It will have to relieve itself where it eats and sleeps. It will be depressed and it will cry constantly for the family that abandoned it. If your pet is lucky, I will have enough volunteers in that day to take him/her for a walk. If I don't, your pet won't get any attention besides having a bowl of food slid under the kennel door and the waste sprayed out of its pen with a high-powered hose. If your dog is big, black or any of the "Bully" breeds (pit bull, rottie, mastiff, etc) it was pretty much dead when you walked it through the front door. Those dogs just don't get adopted. It doesn't matter how 'sweet' or 'well behaved' they are. If your dog doesn't get adopted within its 72 hours and the shelter is full, it will be destroyed. If the shelter isn't full and your dog is good enough, and of a desirable enough breed it may get a stay of execution, but not for long . Most dogs get very kennel protective after about a week and are destroyed for showing aggression. Even the sweetest dogs will turn in this environment. If your pet makes it over all of those hurdles chances are it will get kennel cough or an upper respiratory infection and will be destroyed because shelters just don't have the funds to pay for even a $100 treatment. Here's a little euthanasia 101 for those of you that have never witnessed a perfectly healthy, scared animal being "put-down". First, your pet will be taken from its kennel on a leash. They always look like they think they are going for a walk happy, wagging their tails. Until they get to "The Room", every one of them freaks out and puts on the brakes when we get to the door. It must smell like death or they can feel the sad souls that are left in there, it's strange, but it happens with every one of them. Your dog or cat will be restrained, held down by 1 or 2 vet techs depending on the size and how freaked out they are. Then a euthanasia tech or a vet will start the process. They will find a vein in the front leg and inject a lethal dose of the "pink stuff". Hopefully your pet doesn't panic from being restrained and jerk. I've seen the needles tear out of a leg and been covered with the resulting blood and been deafened by the yelps and screams. They all don't just "go to sleep", sometimes they spasm for a while, gasp for air and defecate on themselves. When it all ends, your pets corpse will be stacked like firewood in a large freezer in the back with all of the other animals that were killed waiting to be picked up like garbage. What happens next? Cremated? Taken to the dump? Rendered into pet food? You'll never know and it probably won't even cross your mind. It was just an animal and you can always buy another one, right? I hope that those of you that have read this are bawling your eyes out and can't get the pictures out of your head I deal with everyday on the way home from work. I hate my job, I hate that it exists & I hate that it will always be there unless you people make some changes and realize that the lives you are affecting go much farther than the pets you dump at a shelter. Between 9 and 11 MILLION animals die every year in shelters and only you can stop it. I do my best to save every life I can but rescues are always full, and there are more animals coming in everyday than there are homes. My point to all of this DON'T BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER PETS DIE! Hate me if you want to. The truth hurts and reality is what it is. I just hope I maybe changed one persons mind about breeding their dog, taking their loving pet to a shelter, or buying a dog. I hope that someone will walk into my shelter and say "I saw this and it made me want to adopt". THAT WOULD MAKE IT WORTH IT!

Animal Loverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04952707387618688523noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8114507638922773782.post-82674881509269173032009-05-01T20:06:00.000-07:002009-05-01T20:08:06.635-07:00Why Are There So Many Homeless Pets? Why Are There So Many Homeless Pets? There are so many homeless pets because unfortunately, many people do not think about the long term commitment, financial responsibility, moral responsibility (i.e. spay/neuter, heartworm prevention) and work involved when they bring a pet into their home. The decision to add a pet to your family is a serious 10-15 year commitment and should not be taken lightly. In addition, we have an overwhelming pet overpopulation problem in the United States. Each year approximately 8 million healthy dogs and cats are killed simply because there aren't enough homes for all of them. This is due to individual pet guardians not spaying/neutering their pets (accidental breedings), individual pet guardians breeding their pets on purpose and thinking it is OK because (1)they have a "purebred" (2) because they think that their pet should experience motherhood or (3) because they think that they have such an exceptional pet and also because of puppymillers and irresponsible breeders. The top reasons pets brought to shelters are: 1. Strays - This is caused by guardians who let their pets roam, who don't spay/neuter them so they look for opposite sex companionship, guardians who abandon their animals or never bother looking for them once they are gone and by guardians who don't keep ID tags on their animals at all times (regardless of if the dog\cat is an inside only dog\cat or if the dog\cat has never before gotten out of the yard.) 2. Moving - We can't tell you how many times a day we hear this one! Guardians moving to other cities who don't want to pay to transport their pets, guardians moving into an apartment that won't take pets, guardians that don't want to pay a pet deposit, guardians moving into a new house and don't want their pets to dirty it, etc. This is by far the number one reason why guardians dump their pets! Pets are not junk that you throw away when you move, pets should be family members that are taken with every time the family changes its residence! If this doesn't work for you then don't get a pet in the first place. 3. Having a baby - Why is it that so many people no longer want to keep their dog (that they formerly treated as a baby), when they have a human baby of their own? We find that people dump their formerly beloved family pets due to no fault of the pets simply because they have a baby. Often they tell us that the dog is wonderful with the new baby but that they simply don't have time for it anymore. Or they tell us that their dog isn't good with a baby and we find that they have selected a dog breed that is well known to be terrible with babies and toddlers. If they had done simple research prior to getting a certain dog breed and if they had exposed their dog often to small children, they probably wouldn't have had this problem. Also, we find that some dogs don't do well with babies because the families dump the dogs into a permanent backyard existence or an ignored existence once they have a baby. We recommend that people have their family first and then adopt a pet. If that isn't possible, pick a breed or mix that is known to be good with children and socialize to children often. A good book to read is "Childproofing Your Dog" by Brian Kilcommons. 4. Don't have time for - The same people who were so enthusiastic about their new puppies or kittens when they first got them often consider them a burden once they realize that they are a living being that have certain needs that can not be ignored. They are not a toy that they can put away when they feel like it. These people call us and say "I'm traveling more now", "I'm working more now", "I'm going out alot now", "I'm not home enough and the dog isn't getting the attention it deserves" or "I feel guilty but don't have time for the dog". Don't get a dog\cat unless you can make a 10-15 year commitment to its care. 5. Puppy\kitten has grown up - "The puppy has gotten too big", "We wanted a small dog", "It's not cute anymore", "It's gotten too big for inside the house/apartment", "Now that its 9 months old it's acting too wild", "It's too rough for my kids" or "It's too hyper". Be very careful when you adopt a puppy that you are prepared to handle the dog when it reaches adult size. Don't just look at the tiny puppy and think how cute it is. Look at an adult of comparable adult size and make an intelligent decision. Keep in mind that puppies need lots of training and exercise in order for them to become a well behaved pet. When you get a puppy, sign up for a good puppy obedience class and practice often. Also, keep in mind that most puppies and dogs will not exercise themselves...you need to exercise them by providing long walks, ball throwing, etc. Remember that the large breed puppy may play rough and may be too active for your small children. Keep in mind that puppies are a lot of work and that there are hundreds of thousands of well behaved adult dogs\cats being KILLED at our shelters every day that might be a better choice for your family's pet. 6. Behavioral problems - "Dog barks too much", "Dog chews everything up", "Can't get it housebroken", "Too hyper", "Dog jumps on us", "Dog digs up garden", "Dog runs away or jumps fence", or "Dog is aggressive to strangers or other dogs". Dogs who are raised as outside only pets are usually unhappy and bored and will develop many of these problems, don't get a dog unless you will keep it mainly as a housepet. Puppies can't get housebroken unless someone is home during the day or can come home from work often enough in order to let it outside. Dogs who are not obedience trained will often act hyper and wild. Dogs who are not socialized to strangers and other dogs when they are young will often act aggressive to them when they grow up. Dogs that are not spayed/neutered will often escape from the fenced yard in order to find a mate. If you don't want chewing, then don't get a dog under the age of 3 years. Puppies and young adult dogs naturally will chew, chew, chew. If you have this problem now, confine your dog to a "dog proofed" room with plenty of chew toys when you're not watching it. Make sure that you have the time and money to spend with a puppy or adult dog and that you will allow to stay mainly inside your home before you consider adopting a pet. 7. Children have lost interest - Loving parents often adopt a pet for their children with the understanding that the children must take full responsibility for its care. We have found that children lose interest in caring for their pets within a very short period of time and it then becomes a battle between the parents and children. Please don't adopt a pet unless you, the parent, want the pet as much as your children do. Children can not handle the responsibility of housebreaking a puppy, cleaning a cats litter pan, obedience training, exercising, feeding, brushing, health care, etc, so don't let their begging influence you. YOU will be the one responsible for this pet. 8. Elderly guardians - We get many calls from the children of elderly people who pass away or have to go into a nursing facility. They have made no prior arrangements for who is going to take care of their beloved pets. Please make arrangements in your wills for who will get your animals if something happens to you. If you are a senior citizen and are thinking about adopting a puppy or kitten, please add 15 years to your current age to determine how old you will be when the pet reaches the end of its lifespan. If you think you will be too old to care for it, then consider adopting one of the many wonderful, already housebroken older dogs or cats for your home. Animal Loverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04952707387618688523noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8114507638922773782.post-7214181271877227222009-05-01T19:59:00.000-07:002009-05-01T20:03:49.928-07:00Maggie AKA Margaret Adams/GeBauer/Hill ~ SeattlePet.Com

https://accounts.craigslist.org/post/shwpst?pii=1040835975&db=lv - Shoreline, WA
She has been married three times. First she was Margaret D. Adams, and then she married a man named Harry Robert GeBauer whom she jointly owned "Seattle Pet Center" with at: 8221 - Greenwood Ave. N., Seattle, WA 98103 (which is now closed, it was in business from 01/01/80 to 11/30/84), and became Margaret D. GeBauer. Third time she married Raymond R. Hill, and became Margaret D. Hill AKA Maggie Hill. Now, her business is located at: 16053 - Aurora Ave. N., Shoreline, WA 98133, BUT her business license (no kennel license that I can find) states that the mailing address AND business address is at: 15553 - Dayton Ave. N., Shoreline, WA 98133, which is about five blocks south, and two blocks four blocks west of where her business actually is!! That IS NOT legal!! Next, you are not going to believe this at all, THE CITY OF SHORELINE OWNS THE BUILDING THAT SHE HAS HER BUSINESS IN!!! On July 31st, 2002 Vicki & Thomas Nasky (who have since divorced) bought this building. On February 22nd, 2005 the Nasky's Quit Claim Deeded the property, FOR $10.00, to the CITY OF SHORELINE!? Go figure that one! On June 13th, 2007 the CITY OF SHORELINE named the building "Shoreline Plaza LLC". Seattle Pet got their license on 03/01/2000. Now on May 29th, 1992, Harry Robert GeBauer finalized his divorce from Maggie, and he was the one who petitioned for the divorce. The two of them still have a current business license that is: GeBauer & GeBauer, Seattle Design Center at: 15009 - Aurora Ave. N., Shoreline, WA 98133, and is just ten blocks straight down the street from SeattlePet.Com, which is licensed as Seattle Pet, and at a different address. Now the address that Margaret AKA Maggie has on her Seattle Pet business license is in a residential area, and it is her home!! The address shows that she owns that home on Dayton Ave. N.

Animal Loverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04952707387618688523noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8114507638922773782.post-69051388082126409682009-05-01T19:56:00.000-07:002009-05-01T19:59:04.721-07:00Who to contact TO STOP PUPPY MILLS ~ where to DONATE/VOLUNTEERFor SB5651 ~ The Puppy Mill Bill & SB5402 ~ The Animal Cruelty Bill:

http://apps.leg.wa.gov... http://apps.leg.wa.gov... http://members.verizon.net/~vze2r6qt/supplies/compare.htm#Refuse ************************************************************************************************ GOVERNOR CHRISTINE GREGOIRE Office of the Governor PO Box 40002 Olympia, WA 98504-0002 Phone: (360) 902-4111 Fax: (360) 753-4110 Website: http://www.governor.wa.gov Email: http://www.governor.wa.gov/contact/ Website: http://www.governor.wa.gov Then to email click on contact the governor and send email via webform http://www.governor.wa.gov/contact/ _____________________________ Snohomish County Prosecutor's Office 3000 Rockefeller, M/S 504, Everett, WA 98201 E-mail: prosecuting.attorney@co.snohomish.wa.us ______________________ LT. Her mom (Marjorie Ann Sundberg) lives across the street at: 4302 - 165th Ave. S.E., Snohomish, WA 98290, and is doing the same. Mary Ann Holleman AKA Mary Ann Hollerman @ 4525 - 165th Ave. S.E., Snohomish, WA 98290 (and she is the sister to Renee Roske, and daughter to Marjorie A. Sundberg!!). Also, Mary Ann Holleman (AKA Hollerman) owns the property where the puppy mill was raided on Friday January 16th, 2008 which is located at: 43020 - May Creek Road S.E., Gold Bar, WA 98294!! Before being critical of this post, there IS documentation regarding all the sick dogs that she sales, many of which have died! On the first link provided in this post you will see fifty-five (55) complaints against Renee, as well as the next link which also shows the complaints against Renee. There are also numerous complaints with animal control, police, SPCA, ripoffreport.com, seattle.citysearch.com, and many other places. She and her mom were also on the tv news, and in the newspaper on more than one occassion. The other building on the property is filled with animals! Sure her home is clean, she pays someone with all the money she makes, OFF OF SELLING (PUPPY MILLING) DOGS & PUPPIES, to clean her home. The dogs leave there sick, and alot of them actually die! She always gives a zip lock bag full of medicine for the dogs to the new owner. She never has papers, and when she does, they are the wrong ones! I'm sorry, but with 55+ complaints, the tv news, the newspaper, and my own experience, there is no way all of us can possibly be wrong. This woman should be put in prison, for what she is doing. Included are four (4) ads that are CURRENTLY RUNNING IN THE "LITTLE NICKEL" PAPER!! You can contact the "Little Nickel" paper at: www.littlenickel.com, and send them an e-mail letting them know they are supporting a puppy mill, by repeatedly placing her ads!! The term can be applied to operations involving other animals irresponsibly bred for profit, e.g. "kitty mills."[4] Contents [hide] 1 Differences in breeding conditions 2 Effects 3 History 4 Controversy 5 Media coverage 6 Legislative response 6.1 United States, Federal 6.2 Australia 7 References 8 External links [edit] Differences in breeding conditions Responsible breeders raise their animals with the intent to produce a healthy dog, and to provide a quality pet for responsible owners.[5] Good breeders will take into consideration breed-specific health problems, genetic screening, physical condition, age of the dog and temperament before producing litters. Good breeders carefully nurture the mothers and the puppies they produce. They constantly check the puppies' health, and ensure they are properly socialized.[6] In contrast, dogs bred in puppy mills are usually kept in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions. They usually do not receive adequate food, water or veterinary care. Both breeding dogs and their puppies tend to be housed in extremely cramped conditions, often exposed to the elements. Females are sometimes forced to breed every time they are in heat to increase profits, resulting in gradually decreasing sizes of litters.[2][7] As puppies, mill dogs are weaned from their mothers well before the eight to ten weeks recommended.[8] Dogs in puppy mills are often bred indiscriminately. While the puppies produced may come with pedigrees, the pedigree itself is neither an indication of quality nor authenticity.[9] [edit] Effects Due to the poor breeding conditions in puppy mills, puppies bred there tend to have issues. Puppies raised in a cramped environment shared by many other dogs become poorly socialized to other dogs and to humans. Dogs are then transported over long distances in poor conditions, sometimes resulting in the deaths of many dogs. As the surviving mill dogs grow older, they are more prone to developing respiratory ailments and pneumonia, as well as hereditary defects such as hip dysplasia.[2] In addition, mill dogs are more prone to have problems with their temperament. Puppies from mills are usually sold as purebred dogs in an attempt to fetch the higher prices associated with purebreds. However, due to the indiscriminate breeding practices of puppy mills, the dog may or may not actually be a purebred puppy.[9] The vast majority of puppy mill animals are sold to pet stores by "dealers". Some puppies are sold by dealers masquerading as authentic breeders. Reputable breeders never sell puppies to dealers or pet stores.[9][8] Local animal shelters are a reliable source for puppies that do not benefit puppy mill operators. Another recommended source for puppies are breed-specific rescue organizations.[2] By contrast, some breeders registered with the Royal New South Wales Canine Council (AU) do provide animals for sale through pet shops. Keith Irwin, President of the Royal NSW Canine Council, indicated that only breeders accredited by PIAA (Pet Industry Association of Australia) may sell to pet stores.[10] [edit] History According to Canis Major publications, puppy mills originated in the post-World War II era. Midwestern farmers looking for an alternative crop reacted to a growing demand for puppies, resulting in the development of the first commercial puppy business. As the business grew, both small and large retail outlets began to sell puppies through pet departments. At around the same time, the first pet store chains were born.[11] Through indifference or ignorance, many puppies were left unsocialized or exposed in existing chicken coops or rabbit hutches. In addition, veterinary care for these puppies was often overlooked because of an inability to pay. As a result, organizations such as the Humane Society of the United States began to investigate breeding kennels, leading to the passage of the Animal Welfare Act of August 24, 1966.[11][12] According to the Humane Society of the United States, thousands of puppy mills are located around the country.[13] A high concentration of both puppy mills and breeders has been reported to be in the states of Pennsylvania, Arkansas, Kansas and Missouri.[14] [edit] Controversy Miniature breeds at a US puppy mill The term "puppy mill" has been widely used by animal rights groups in protests against smaller breeders who may appear to have substandard breeding conditions. Such breeders, occasionally labeled hobby breeders, are often cited by animal rights groups as puppy mills. Hobby breeders claim that emotional rhetoric, sensationalism, and pictures of dirty kennels are used to justify additional legislation or additional restrictive licensing that travels well beyond the initial goal of removing dogs from truly deplorable conditions.[11] Some hobby breeders argue that many attempts to legislate puppy mills would put them out of business. Many hobby breeders argue the laws, which often require extra paperwork and inspections, would be more of a nuisance than help in shutting down puppy mills. Such breeders often cite existing lemon laws for puppies as sufficient protection for both dogs and prospective buyers.[14] Commercial kennels may be licensed by the United States Department of Agriculture which may inspect the kennels routinely.[15] [edit] Media coverage On May 29, 2008, MSNBC aired a report about puppy mills, in which Oprah Winfrey revealed an industry fraught with problems and apparent cruelty. The broadcast showed puppy mills with small cages, with chicken wire floors, stacked in rows from floor to ceiling, and stated that many dogs spend their entire lives within these tiny cages. Many of these dogs are sold on the internet or by pet retailers to buyers who are unaware of the dogs' background. The report claimed that customers who object to this treatment of puppies unknowingly allow the industry to thrive. It also pointed out that many of the puppy mill bred dogs suffer long-term health problems.[16][dead link] [edit] Legislative response [edit] United States, Federal In the United States, some elements of the dog breeding industry are regulated by the Animal Welfare Act of August 24, 1966.[17] [edit] Australia Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore has responded to the problem of puppy mills in Australia by proposing the Animals Regulation of Sale Bill.[18] It would ban the sale of dogs through pet shops, the internet or newspapers. The aim is to crack down on impulse purchases and shut down unregistered backyard breeders. These breeders should no longer easily profit from the sale of the dogs, and the number of unwanted and abandoned animals could drop.[19] Opposition to the bill comes from the Australian Veterinary Association and the Pet Industry Association. They say that the bill makes no difference to shelter admissions or euthanasia rates.[20] Some claim that the bill will only serve to push unregistered breeders further underground.[20] In New South Wales alone, more than 60,000 animals are put down each year.[19] Australia-wide the number is over a quarter of a million.[21] [edit] References ^ Farr Introduces Bill to Regulate Puppy Farms ^ a b c d e ASPCA (2007). My work is sanctioned by the HSUS, the ASPCA, BEST FRIENDS, LAST CHANCE FOR ANIMALS and CAPS, I have also worked with law enforcement on animal cruelty cases. I think it is great that those posting probably really do care about animals and we really appreciate that, we need more like you. Having said that, please pay close attention; this is quick course in puppy mills. We are not telling you this in a disparaging way, we just think the facts are critically important to this discussion: First of all Sierra Fish & Pets is not a puppy mill, the y are a pet store that buys their puppies from puppy mills and if a pet store is not offering rescues, their dogs are coming from puppy mills. This is indisputable as responsible breeders DO NOT SELL TO PET STORES! SF&P work with a broker that is located in Iowa. Through this broker, whom also owns a puppy mill, puppies are purchased from other mills. The majority of SF&P puppies are purchased from Iowa, the rest, from other midwest states, or the "puppy mill belt of the US." How do we know? Because we have investigated them. We have spoken with the owner of SF&P, and he does not have photos of where the puppies are coming from, in fact, he admitted, "he did not realize any of this." Further, in terms of breeding facilties, USDA licensed and inspected DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE NOT A PUPPY MILL. The definition of a puppy mill is a "breeding facility that breeds for profit," that is it, and they are legal. They are not always dirty facilities, some are clean, nevertheless, they are what we consider prisons. Do you think your dog would like to live it's life in a cage? We don't. According to the Animal Welfare Act, which is the only law enforced by the USDA, dogs may be confined 24/7, with no exercise, (only an "exercise plan" is necessary and this cannot be enforced.) They may have as many as 12 dogs per cage, with an allowed space of 6" beyond each dogs measurement. Also, there are 10,000 facilities that are monitored by the USDA and only 70 investigators. They are not mandated to go to a breeding facility twice a year, and in MOST CASES, do not. They don't have the man-power. Next, "papers" do not guarantee purebreed or anything else. Most of the time they are falsified and inaccurate. For $25., the AKC will give you your "papers", and are not able to verify any of the information. The most unfortunate part of this puppy mill primer is that pet stores can say anything they want because they do not have to be accountable to anyone. There is no oversight whatsoever, and store owners can tell customers anything without worry of any harm. It has been going on for decades. Not only does the public fall victim to the lies, but well-intentioned, animal-loving store-employees fall victim as well. That is why store protests are occurring across the country and the movement is growing. For this reason, for the first time, store-owners will have to be accountable for their lies. One last item, to dispel the myth about rescues vs. store-bought dogs. 30% of all dogs available in rescue are purebreeds. And, dogs purchased in pet stores come from puppy mills and as a result, more often than not, come with horrific health problems. I won't go into stats, but it's a fact. Thank you for caring. Please Google puppy mills, and learn the real truth.

Animal Loverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04952707387618688523noreply@blogger.com0
